Most Britons don’t want the economy to return to the way it was before the pandemic, with half of those surveyed saying the government should maintain current levels of public spending.
Former chancellor Lord Darling said the pandemic offers an opportunity for moving to an economy that uses less carbon.
Another former chancellor, Lord Lamont, said talk of social distancing becoming “semi-permanent” is “completely against human nature” and would “bankrupt whole swathes of the economy”.
