ABC News (Australia) published this video item, entitled “Colonial-era sedition law suspended by Indian court | The World” – below is their description.
India’s Supreme Court has suspended a colonial-era sedition law, deciding it was outdated and being abused to crackdown on free speech. The rule, introduced in the nineteenth century, was an effort by the British administration to quell India’s pro-independence movement. Associate Editor at Indian news website Scroll.in, Shoaib Daniyal, says India’s ruling party has co-opted the law in recent years to punish anti-government voices.
