Colombian authorities are warning that anti-government protests threaten to prolong a devastating third wave of the pandemic. On Friday, confirmed deaths from COVID-19 passed 80,000, and hospital wards are full. But the protesters are undeterred. They say little has been done about another death toll – that of demonstrators shot by security forces. DW’s Johan Ramirez is in Cali, where people have been taking to the streets to demand answers.

Colombia is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea, the northwest by Panama, the south by Ecuador and Peru, the east by Venezuela, the southeast by Brazil, and the west by the Pacific Ocean.

The capital is Bogotá, the country’s largest city. With over 50 million inhabitants Colombia is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world. The Republic of Colombia was declared in 1886. Panama seceded in 1903.

Colombia’s territory encompasses Amazon rainforest, highlands, grasslands, and deserts, and it is the only country in South America with coastlines and islands along both the Atlantic and Pacific.
