South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Climate change threatens to sink free-dive fishing traditions of South Korea’s ‘sea women’” – below is their description.
The centuries-old traditions of South Korean women who practise free-dive fishing without oxygen face a new threat. Already under pressure from the competition of more modern fishing methods, now the haenyeo or “sea women” face a new challenge from climate change that is harming marine habitat where they work. Jin So-hee and Woo Jung-min, some of the youngest haenyeo still working in South Korea, are trying to fight the problem. Clad in black wet suits and face masks, the pair have started a YouTube channel they hope will help preserve haenyeo culture as it raises awareness about the need for environmental conservation.
