Chrystia Freeland replaces Bill Morneau to become first female finance minister

Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland was sworn-in as finance minister during a cabinet shuffle at Rideau Hall on Tuesday, making her the first woman to hold the position.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the shuffling of his cabinet earlier in the day Tuesday, following the resignation of former finance minister Bill Morneau on Monday.

Morneau had been under fire over his role in the WE Charity scandal, particularly his failure to recused himself from cabinet discussions given his family financial ties.

Veteran Liberal Dominic LeBlanc has taken over the role of minister of intergovernmental affairs from Freeland.
