Christmas Island is a remote Australian territory bathed in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. It’s known for its Red Crab migration, snorkeling, and being the site of the Tampa controversy in 2001.
Since then, Australia has intermittently used Christmas Island to house an offshore processing facility for refugees. It’s currently holding four members of the Sri Lankan Tamil Bileola family.
As the deadly coronavirus spreads through central China, the Federal Government has decided to use Christmas Island for another purpose.
