Millions of Christians around the world celebrated a second Easter under coronavirus restrictions on Sunday. The event was also marked by Pope Francis who offered the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. With Italy under strict lockdown due to coronavirus restrictions, it’s the second year the Pope faced smaller crowds. But his message was one for the world.
The Catholic leader focused his message on the world’s most vulnerable, including those suffering from the coronavirus pandemic. And he called for an end to armed conflicts around the globe, like that in Syria, where many also gathered to mark one of the most important Christian holidays of the year.
They were among millions across the world who found ways to celebrate despite COVID-19 restrictions.
In Jerusalem, this year worshippers were allowed to participate in Mass at the Holy Sepulchre – considered the holiest place in Christianity. And there too, hope amid the pandemic was front of mind.
