New Zealand’s Prime Minister on Saturday said that the terror attacks perpetrated on communities in two mosques two years earlier left the country with a legacy that was “heartbreaking”, but that it was also “never too early or too late for the legacy to be a more inclusive nation”.

Jacinda Ardern acknowledged that Muslim communities in the country had experienced hatred and racism long before the attacks in Christchurch, in which a white supremacist killed 51 people and injured 40 more.

Speaking at a remembrance service at the Christchurch Arena attended by several hundred people including families of victims and survivors, Adern spoke about the role of government in bringing about change in the wake of the attacks, adding that it was also up to every individual to use “the power of words” to make a difference.

A similar service planned for last year was cancelled at the last minute due to the sudden spread of the coronavirus.

In 2019, a white supremacist opened fire on worshippers during Friday prayers.

Last year he pleaded guilty to 92 counts of murder, attempted murder and terrorism.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
