Chinese-born director Chloé Zhao became the first woman of colour to win the Academy Award for best director at the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021. She also became only the second woman to win a best director Oscar. Her film Nomadland also won best picture, and its co-producer Frances McDormand who played the main character on screen picked up this year’s Academy Award for best actress.
