Twenty-eight koalas have been transferred from bushfire-ravaged Kangaroo Island to establish a disease-free colony on the South Australian mainland.
The Kangaroo Island koalas are the only in the country that don’t suffer from chlamydia and an AIDS-like condition known as koala retrovirus.
The hope is a breeding program will allow disease-free koalas to be reintroduced into the wild.
