Workers began constructing a new barrier outside the former US consulate in the Chinese city of Chengdu on Monday night.
Sections of the wall were being put up one by one, about one car lane from the sidewalk.
The consulate was ordered by China to close in retaliation for the US shutting down its consulate in Houston last week.
Chinese authorities took control of the building in the southwestern city earlier on Monday amid rising tensions between the global powers.
China maintains consulates in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York in addition to its embassy in Washington.
The US has four other consulates in China and an embassy in Beijing, keeping the sides in parity in terms of diplomatic missions.
