Chinese vice FM: Over 170 countries reaffirm commitment to one-China principle

CGTN published this video item, entitled “Chinese vice FM: Over 170 countries reaffirm commitment to one-China principle” – below is their description.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu sat down with CGTN’s Liu Xin to discuss U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to China’s Taiwan region. He gave his response on the G7 foreign ministers’ statement on Taiwan, in which they had expressed “concern” over China’s actions.

“More than 170 countries and many international organizations have spoken up for what is right, reaffirming their commitment to the one-China principle and expressing support for China in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both the president of the UN General Assembly and the UN secretary-general have stated that the UN will continue to adhere to UNGA Resolution 2758, the centerpiece of which is the one-China principle. Compared with over 170 countries, what do G7 think they are? Who cares what they say?” he said.

In This Story: Taiwan

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
