South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Chinese pig breeders go hi-tech after calls from President Xi Jinping to boost food security” – below is their description.
China’s pig breeders are going hi-tech to develop pigs that grow faster, need less feed and produce bigger litters. China is the world’s leading pork producer, but relies heavily on imports for breeding material. Around 100 farms have enrolled in a state-led bid to improve the genetics of their pigs and aim for self-sufficiency amid renewed calls from Chinese President Xi Jinping to boost food security. Genetic improvements are in high demand, but lack of experience in data analysis, high costs, competition and market volatility continue to pose challenges.
