Confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide are approaching 500 million, with over 6 million deaths, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. The Chinese mainland pulls out all the stops to battle an infection spike, with nearly 1,400 new cases reported on Tuesday. Two areas in particular are struggling – the megacity of Shanghai and the northeastern province of Jilin. Compared to the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, the situation in Shanghai is noticeably different, with the great majority of cases relatively benign, most of them asymptomatic.
