    Only 12 million babies were born in China last year. It may seem like a lot, but it’s actually the lowest in more than half a century. Data from the one-in-a-decade census released this week confirms the country’s birth rate has plummeted. China demographer Professor Stuart Gietel-Basten tells The World the decline means China will face economic and social challenges in addressing its aging population.
