South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “China’s controversial ‘Syrian-style’ cafes draw influencers with crumbling, ‘war zone-like’ decor” – below is their description.
“Syrian-style” cafes have been trending in China in recent months. But instead of serving Middle Eastern delicacies, these cafes are dubbed “Syrian” due to their run down “war-torn” appearance. The exposed bricks and crumbling concrete decor have become popular photo shoot sites for Chinese influencers. However, the trend has sparked online criticism that the cafe concept is insensitive. Syria has been embroiled in a civil war since 2011 that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
