While podcasting has long been on the media menu in the West, the digital audio downloads have only recently started gaining popularity in China. More than 7,000 new podcasts went online in the country in 2020, with an audience estimated to be nearly 10 million. But under the country’s tightly managed media ecosystem, podcast hosts must tread carefully when serving up counter-narratives or critical analysis on social issues that may be considered taboo.
