China warns the US not to ‘play with fire’ as tensions rise over Taiwan conflict

Channel 4 News published this video item, entitled “China warns the US not to ‘play with fire’ as tensions rise over Taiwan conflict” – below is their description.

The prospect that one of the most senior politicians in the USA, Nancy Pelosi, is about to fly into Taiwan, has stoked tension with China.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives has long been a vocal critic of the Chinese government. If she visited the island, she would be the most senior US politician to do so since Newt Gingrich in 1997.

But China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province that should ultimately be re-united with the mainland.

In This Story: Taiwan

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
