China-U.S. ties in the pits: What now?

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered a speech seeking an end to the long-held engagement with China. It’s yet another straw that’s breaking the back of China-U.S. relations. Both sides have carried out tit-for-tat measures – recently the closing of consulates, restricting visas and new rules on diplomatic travel, as well as expelling foreign correspondents. Could bilateral relations get any worse? Tian Wei asked David Lampton, one of the most respected voices on China from the U.S. He is also the former president of the National Committee on United States-China Relations. He said some of the U.S. decisions are just the latest in an extended line of self-defeating moves that will weaken America’s infrastructure of global cultural influence.

Mike Pompeo is an American politician, diplomat, businessman, and attorney who, since April 2018, has been serving as 70th United States secretary of state. He is a former United States Army officer and was Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from January 2017 until April 2018.

President Donald Trump nominated Pompeo as secretary of state in March 2018, with Pompeo succeeding Rex Tillerson after his dismissal. Pompeo was confirmed by the Senate on April 26, 2018, in a 57–42 vote and was sworn in the same day.
