Chinese and U.S. officials wrapped up their talks in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. The two-day dialogue marked the first high-level face-to-face meeting between the two countries since President Joe Biden took office. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said despite the differences, there are places where the interests of the two nations overlap. China acknowledged as much, commending the meeting as timely, useful and fostering mutual understanding between the world’s two largest economies. So can China and the U.S. turn a corner after the Alaska meeting? For insights, Tian Wei talked to Susan Thornton, former acting assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs. She is currently a senior fellow and research scholar at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale University Law School. Through 30 years of experience with the U.S. State Department, she was involved in trade tensions between China and the U.S. during a rapidly changing international environment. Let’s hear what she has to say.
