The Ministry of Emergency Management of China launched an emergency response after a magnitude 6 earthquake struck the southwestern province of Sichuan on September 16, 2021. Thousands of rescuers have been mobilised to distribute tents, summer quilts and folding beds to more than 80,000 people evacuated. Rescuers also distributed food, including mooncakes, a traditional treat for next week’s Mid-Autumn Festival. The earthquake struck at 4.33am at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles) in Lu county in Luzhou city. The epicentre was about 200 kilometres (124 miles) southeast of the provincial capital Chengdu. State media reported that three people died and 100 were injured in the quake that destroyed over 29,000 homes and disrupted multiple electrical power lines.
