As China enters its autumn 2020 harvest season, agricultural produce from staples such as rice and corn, to fruits and seaweed are rolling into the consumer market. Beijing authorities say the country can expect a bumper harvest this year, with 650 million tonnes (717 million tons) of grain harvested, according to official figures. But severe floods in central China and three typhoons in the nation’s northeastern corn belt have delivered further blows to a food supply chain that was already under stress from the coronavirus pandemic. In August, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the country to reduce food waste as food imports declined because of Covid-19 restrictions. Support us: https://subscribe.scmp.com
