China accused of deploying missiles over contested island

China has been accused of deploying an advanced surface-to-air missile system to the hotly contested Woody Island, in the South China Sea.

The allegation is supported by U.S. and Taiwanese officials – but Beijing says Western media is misportraying the issue.

This is a previous satellite image of Woody Island, called Yongxingdao by China.

The picture shows considerable building work – including a runway.

Woody Island is part of the Paracels chain, which has been under Chinese control for more than 40 years – but is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam.

Beijing says that it also owns the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal, to the anger of the nearby Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

The red line indicates China’s claimed territorial waters.

Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett reports.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
