Chile has seen a sharp spike in murders, with homicides increasing by 40 percent between 2016 and 2021, according to the country’s Department of Crime Prevention.
Authorities are blaming international drug gangs who have expanded into the country. It is especially bad in the northern region of Tarapacá where politicians have asked the government to declare a state of emergency, according to a local media report.

Murder is the unlawful killing of another human without justification or valid excuse, especially the unlawful killing of another human with malice aforethought. This state of mind may, depending upon the jurisdiction, distinguish murder from other forms of unlawful homicide, such as manslaughter.
