Childcare costs now higher than private school fees, experts call for new funding model | ABC News

Australia’s ABC News produced this story which indicates that some parents in the country are paying more for childcare than they would spend if their children were in private schools.

New research has found some parents are now paying more to send their children to pre-school and child care than to a private school.

For two parents on an average income, annual out-of-pocket costs now exceed the median private school fee by almost $500 a year.

Government investment has doubled over the past decade, but so too has demand, with almost one million families now claiming the child care rebate.

For many it’s not enough, with some parents saying they simply can’t afford more than one child.

National education reporter Conor Duffy reports.

For many parents, particularly those working away from home, such as in the army, private schooling has for a long time made a lot of sense. The rising cost of childcare means that private schooling may have more of a future in our changing world – for example with more parents working from home.
