The Democratic mayor of Chicago has taken her feud with the US president to the next level, by urging Chicagoans to call the police if they witness federal agents behaving ‘unconstitutionally.’
Not-so light-footed Lori Lightfoot wants Chicago’s police or social services to know ‘if something doesn’t look right’ in her city. She said that if the agents sent by the US president ‘step out of line,’ she’s ‘not going to hesitate to take the president to court.’
Donald Trump recently announced he was ‘surging’ 150 federal officers from several agencies to the Midwestern city to fight rising gun crime. The intervention is part of Operation Legend – which aims to crack down on gun violence – named after four-year-old LeGend Taliferro of Kansas City, Missouri, killed earlier this month in a shooting.
Lightfoot has repeatedly refused Trump’s offers for reinforced police in Chicago, arguing that the president is trying to shift the focus from his ‘failed’ handling of the coronavirus pandemic to violence in Chicago.
Mayor Lightfoot sent a letter to Trump where she argued that sending ‘secret, federal agents’ to Chicago could ‘spell disaster,’ if they weren’t under the direct command of the Chicago PD.
Not all of Chicago’s leaders are on board with the mayor’s approach. Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara said Lightfoot was ‘literally running the Titanic into an iceberg intentionally.’ He appears to have requested help from the federal government, which he says Lightfoot sent him a stream of furious text messages about.
