Champions League final: French police ‘don’t know how to handle football supporters’ • FRANCE 24

FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “Champions League final: French police ‘don’t know how to handle football supporters’ • FRANCE 24” – below is their description.

UEFA announced on Monday it was opening an “independent report” into the security chaos before the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid at the Stade de France in Paris. France blamed the behaviour of Liverpool supporters as well as “massive” ticket fraud for the chaotic scenes that marred the event. All the while, Liverpool was blaming the heavy handedness of French police. Eurosport journalist Ruben Slagter joins FRANCE 24 and says the organisers must accept a certain level of responsibility for the ensuing chaos. “It was just badly organised.” Mr. Slagter found it strange that “there weren’t any perimeters around the stadium.” He describes the French police excessive use of force as an aggravating factor that turned a very challenging situation into a dangerous one. And Mr. Slagter explains that the issue with police is reflective of “French football in general. There is a real issue with how to treat fans, and now the whole world has seen it.” French police “don’t know how to handle football supporters,” he asserts. And this gives France, the Stade de France and Saint-Denis all “just a really bad image.”
