Hong Kong’s flagship carrier Cathay Pacific Airways has announced it will cut thousands of jobs including 5,300 staff based in the city, and that it will immediately shut down its mainland China-focused Cathay Dragon brand. Cathay CEO Augustus Tang Kin-wing said the moves announced on October 21, 2020, were a “heart-wrenching decision” made in response to the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on global air travel.
