Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Cash for kids? Italy’s government plans major support for families” – below is their description.
Since the COVID pandemic, Italy’s population – the world’s second-oldest – has dropped by nearly 400,000.
A high death rate in the pandemic combined with a historically low birth rate to shrink the population.
Postponing a family is common in Italy and births have been declining since the 2008 crisis.
The government is offering cash benefits to families having more children to help reverse the trend.
Al Jazeera’s Adam Raney reports from Rome, Italy.
