Canadian ministers outline federal help for BC to combat wildfires | FULL

Global News published this video item, entitled “Canadian ministers outline federal help for BC to combat wildfires | FULL” – below is their description.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan detailed Friday the various supports the federal government was putting in place to help with the B.C. wildfires, including various aircraft being provided for supplies and personnel. He also said they had a Canadian Armed Forces immediate response unit of 350 members in Edmonton, who will be able to deploy and help with issues like logistics when called upon.

Sajjan outlined the assistance alongside Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion Minister Carla Qualtrough, and Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

Blair also said an investigation into the cause of the Lytton fire that destroyed the town was “very actively” underway and more information would come from RCMP once it can be made available.

Amid suggestions the Lytton fire may have been due to a spark from a train moving through the area, Blair said he had spoken with Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra about the potential concerns of trains moving through areas of B.C. impacted by wildfires, but could not say if any restrictions would take place.

There are currently 136 active fires in the province, with 49 of those sparked in just the last two days.

These are mostly located in the Interior and towards the north of the province near Prince George.

Right now, there are 1,362 homes under evacuation order in the province due to the wildfires and an additional 950 homes are under evacuation alert.
