Global News published this video item, entitled “Canadian ministers announce funding for Indigenous communities | LIVE” – below is their description.
Canada’s Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller is expected to announce federal funding for Indigenous communities regarding the impacts of discovering unmarked graves at former residential schools across the country.
He will be joined by Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu, and Minister of Justice David Lametti.
In April, Miller announced $326,000 in federal funding to resume ground searches for potential unmarked graves near a former Nova Scotia residential school during a visit to the Sipekne’katik First Nation, north of Halifax.
Canada’s residential school system locked away more than 150,000 Indigenous children, ripping them from their families and culture in an effort to destroy Indigenous identities. Thousands died from abuse, disease and malnutrition, and countless more were subjected to physical and sexual violence by priests and nuns.
Anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience can access the 24-hour, toll-free and confidential National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.
