Global News published this video item, entitled “Canada to repeal mandatory minimums for drug offences, justice minister announces | LIVE” – below is their description.
Justice Minister and Attorney General David Lametti will speak with reporters Tuesday to lay out the details of a new bill the Liberals are introducing that would revive the legislative push to repeal mandatory minimum penalties for drug offences.
He will be joined by Minister for Women, Gender Equality and Youth Marci Ien and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice Gary Anandasangaree.
The move would revive a previous bill tabled in February that failed to gain parliamentary approval before the fall election began. When that started, the bill died on the order paper meaning it needed to be reintroduced in the new Parliament.
While new details could be included in this bill, the previous rendition would have allowed for greater use of conditional sentences, such as house arrest, counselling or treatment, for people who do not pose a threat to public safety.
At the time, Lametti said the bill was intended to also address the fact too many lower-risk and first-time offenders were being imprisoned, often capturing a disproportionate number of Indigenous and Black people.
