Global News published this video item, entitled “Canada announces multi-faceted approach to combat online hate speech, crime | FULL” – below is their description.
Canada’s attorney general and minister of justice David Lametti announced a multi-faceted approach to dealing with online hate speech in Canada. Bill C-36, which was proposed in the House of Commons Wednesday, allows for anyone to file a formal complaint to the Canadian Human Rights Commission and “amends the criminal code to improve prosecution and prevention of hate crimes,” Lametti said.
The crack down on online extremism follows the killing of a Muslim family in London, Ont., a crime that police said was inspired by hate. Four members of the family were killed on June 6 when a pickup truck jumped the curb and ran them over.
Canadian Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault added that “at the initiative of Canada we’ve launched an international coalition of like-minded countries and have decided to start working together on these issues. Germany, France, Australia, Finland and we are having conversations with a number of other countries who were very interested,” Guilbeault said.
