Canada, the United States, the U.K. and the European Union are imposing sanctions on four officials from China, over human rights violations against Uyghur Muslims in that country.

It’s something Canada has been advocating for — broad, coordinated, international action to address China’s so-called bad behaviour, in this case, over Uyghurs Muslims.

As David Akin reports, the sanctions are not in relation to the trial of the two Michaels, who have been detained in China for more than two years. But the new approach from the Biden administration is one factor that has changed compared to past years.

Its advanced economy is the tenth-largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed international trade networks.
