Emmanuel Macron agreed to send the French ambassador back to Washington after a phone call with the US president,

And Joe Biden pledged not to cut Paris out of future decisions in the Indo-pacific region.

The two leaders agreed to meet in Europe next month.

But will that make any difference?

And will Europe go it alone in defending itself?
