California Rolls Back Reopening Plan as Coronavirus Cases Rise

California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered partial lockdowns in most parts of the state, to minimize coronavirus spread during July 4 celebrations.

The Democratic governor’s order comes amid a troubling increase of California COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

The order applies to 19 counties covering 72% of the state’s population, including Los Angeles County.

Many of the state’s beaches will be closed for the upcoming weekend.

Mayor of Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles County said in an interview with British broadcaster Sky News on Wednesday she did not agree that beaches should be closed.

“We agree that COVID is least likely to be transmitted outdoors, and we know that the beaches are wide open space with lots of social distancing. So to my mind, it does not make sense to close the beaches.”

Newsom ordered parking lots closed at beaches in Southern California and in the San Francisco Bay area to limit overcrowding.
