What happens when a tourism town runs out of tourists?
With the COVID pandemic shutting international borders – and state borders changing frequently – it’s a challenge Cairns, and the area around, is battling with.
Tourism usually generates $3.5 billion a year, and the industry estimates the region is currently losing $5 million a day.
Around a third of the Cairns workforce are receiving JobKeeper, which is due to end in just over a month. What happens then?
