7NEWS Australia published this video item, entitled “Bulk carrier Portland Bay stranded in wild weather off Sydney’s coastline | 7NEWS” – below is their description.
A massive cargo ship is stranded off the coast of Sydney’s Royal National Park.
A rescue operation is underway, but wild weather is making it more difficult. At around 7:30m today the bulk carrier was only a few kilometres from the shore, just north of Wollongong, when it lost power while being pounded by gale force winds and huge waves.
Initially helicopters were going to evacuate the crew, but the conditions made it far too dangerous.
The ship has deployed two anchors to stop it drifting. Three tug boats are braving 8-metre swells to try and tow the boat into deeper water.
