Residents of Hamburg, N.Y. are stuck after an early winter “lake effect” storm dumped heavy snow on parts of western New York state on Friday. At least two deaths have been reported, travel has been disrupted and icy powder is expected to pile higher through the weekend.
While residents expressed concern about the accessibility to the elderly on Saturday morning, children were playing in the snow. “It looks like a winter wonderland but no candies,” a child told Reuters.
The prospect of over 5 feet of powder (1.5 meters) on the ground by the end of the weekend prompted the National Football League to move the Buffalo Bills’ Sunday home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit. “I’m sure they’ll figure it out as soon as possible”, Buffalo Bill’s player Joe Giles-Harris said on Saturday as he awaited news on transportation to his game in Detroit scheduled for Sunday.
By Friday evening, the weather service reported 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) of snow measured in the Erie County village of Orchard Park, 25 km south of Buffalo and more directly in the downwind path of frozen moisture blasting inland off Lake Erie.
“Crazy, we have been downstairs to see if we could open the door, but we could barely open the door. I can’t believe it,” Hamburg resident Mark Bialy said.
