Boston Dynamics’ robot dog sent into Chernobyl to sniff out radiation

The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “Boston Dynamics’ robot dog sent into Chernobyl to sniff out radiation” – below is their description.

Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robotic dog, Spot, has been sent into the area around Chernobyl’s nuclear reactor number four, the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident in 1986. Scientists from the University of Bristol brought the robot, and other types including drones, into the area to test the ability to work in the environment. They hope Spot will be able to create a 3D map of nuclear radiation levels of the site. The robot can do this unassisted, therefore preventing the team from being put at risk in the extremely dangerous area. An estimated 200 tonnes of radioactive fuel still remain in the increasingly unstable steel-and-concrete sarcophagus erected over reactor four by the accident “liquidators”. Such is the fear of radiation leaks that a 355-foot, 36,000-tonne steel arch, the world’s largest movable metal structure, was built and rolled over it in 2016 at a cost of £1.3 billion.
