Boris Johnson has appeared to take credit for Matt Hancock’s resignation, despite Number 10 having said on Friday that he considered the matter closed.

During a campaign visit to Batley, the Prime Minister told broadcasters: “I read the story on Friday and we’ve got a new Health Secretary in post on Saturday and I think that’s about the right pace to proceed in a pandemic.”

Mr Johnson was said to have reluctantly accepted Mr Hancock’s resignation, which was prompted by a “fairly direct” conversation with Mark Spencer, the Government’s chief whip, on Saturday.

It comes as Sajid Javid has promised there will be “no going back” after the final set of restrictions are lifted, ahead of his first statement to the Commons as Health Secretary.
