Guardian News published this video item, entitled “Boris Johnson pledges to increase defence spending to 2.5% by end of decade” – below is their description.
Speaking from the Nato conference in Madrid, the prime minister said the UK would increase defence spending by 2.5% by the end of this decade. ‘In our case that means meeting and being prepared to exceed the target we set ourselves a decade ago of everybody spending 2.5% of GDP on defence.’ Defence secretary Ben Wallace has also urged the government to increase funding for his department. Foreign secretary Lizz Truss however reiterated her point that British troop numbers need to be cut from 82,000 to 72,500. She said ‘we all need to recognise that warfare now is different to warfare as it was 100 years ago, or 200 years ago.’
