Boris Johnson on 5G: The U.K.Cannot Be Vulnerable to State Vendors

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday that the government would carefully consider Huawei’s involvement with Britain’s telecommunications infrastructure.

In January, the UK government decided to let the Chinese tech giant have a limited role supplying new high-speed network equipment to wireless carriers, ignoring US government warnings that it would sever intelligence sharing if the company was not banned.

UK officials have since reassessed Huawei’s role, following US sanctions imposed on the company in May.

Johnson said Monday that he was “determined to get broadband into every part of (the) country,” while also “determined that the UK should not be in any way vulnerable to high-risk state vendors.”

“We’ll have to come up with the right technological solutions but also have to make sure that we continue to deliver the broadband that the UK needs,” he said.
