Making masks mandatory in shops is “the right thing to do,” Britain’s prime minister said Thursday, a day before new rules were set to come into force in England.
The decision to make face coverings obligatory in stores came last week, after weeks of prevarication and days of confused messaging.
Those who flout the law can be fined up to 100 pounds (125 US dollars) by the police under public health laws.
Many European nations, including Germany, Spain, Italy and Greece, already require masks to be worn in enclosed spaces, but Britain has only made masks obligatory on public transit.
Johnson’s government until now recommended – but did not require – mask-wearing in stores.
The new requirement only applies to England. Scotland had already made masks mandatory in stores.
Johnson also commented on claims that senior members of his party had accepted donations from wealthy individuals with links to Russia.
“Let’s be absolutely clear that we do not accept donations from foreigners and from people who do not have U.K. passports,” he said.
