UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday paid tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old veteran and NHS fundraiser, who died after contracting COVID-19.

Flags were also set at half-mast above 10 Downing Street in tribute to the WWII veteran, who shot to fame after raising around 33 million (UK) pounds (40 million US dollars) for the UK’s NHS by walking laps of his back garden during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Johnson called him a “hero in the truest sense of the word” in a video message from Downing Street.

“He became not just a national inspiration, but a beacon of hope for the world,” he said.

He was knighted by the Queen in a ceremony at Windsor castle last year – Queen Elizabeth II plans to provide a private message of condolence to his family, according to Buckingham Palace.
