Boris Johnson has given HS2 the go ahead. The prime minister confirmed that the £88bn HS2 rail line has received the “green signal”, arguing that the “exploding costs” are outweighed by its “fundamental benefits”.
Facing down criticism from his backbenches, Mr Johnson said that the UK’s “great musculoskeletal problem” with transport could not be solved without major investment.
To address concern over management of the line, Mr Johnson also confirmed that a new HS2 minister would be appointed, along with a ministerial oversight group.
