He marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr, and campaigned for social justice right up until his death almost two weeks ago.
Now, the body of former US Congressman John Lewis crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, for the final time on Sunday as remembrances continue for the civil rights legend.
It was on this bridge in 1965 during a civil rights march by hundreds of activists that a police officer fractured Lewis’s skull on a day that became known as Bloody Sunday.
