    Historic places in New South Wales are about to be signified by a series of Blue Plaques.

    Minister Don Harwin says the first building to receive a Blue Plaque is May Gibbs’ Nutcote cottage at Kurraba Point. The building is the former studio home of celebrated children’s author and illustrator May Gibbs who was best known for her Snugglepot and Cuddlepie series.

    Other places being recognised include:

    • The former Registrar General’s Building in Sydney – designed by NSW Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon;

    • Caroline Chisholm College at East Maitland – a hostel for homeless migrants run by campaigner and advocate for girls, women and families Caroline Chisholm;

    • Sir Edward Hallstrom, inventor, businessman – President of the Taronga Zoological Park Trust, and generous benefactor to the Taronga Zoo Sydney.

    The original Blue Plaque scheme was established by the UK’s Society of Arts in 1867. It’s expected that 200 places will receive Blue Plaques in New South Wales soon.

    NSW Treasurer Dom Perrottet MP says the government is developing a program to allow the public to nominate people and places for inclusion in the state’s Blue Plaques program.

    “We want the whole state involved in this (program), not just Sydney. We farming districts. We want villages and towns, as well as cities. And most importantly, we want aboriginal places because our history just doesn’t go to 1788. We’ve got tens of thousands of years of history” – Arts Minister Don Harwin.
