According to Bishnoi legend, more than 300 people died in 1730 trying to protect khejri trees, now the state tree in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Established in the 15th century, the Bishnoi sect believes in the sacredness of all life. Sect members avoid cutting down trees and eating meat.
