Billionaire space race brings new frontiers, challenges for future of space travel

Global News published this video item, entitled “Billionaire space race brings new frontiers, challenges for future of space travel” – below is their description.

On Dec. 3, NASA announced three U.S. companies that would receive over $400 million in government funding to develop commercial space stations – Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Nanoracks and Northrop Grumman.

The International Space Station, which is now more than 20 years old, is facing retirement within the next decade and the agency is turning to the private sector in its search for a replacement.

NASA has increasingly tapped private companies, like Elon Musk’s SpaceX, to shuttle its astronauts into space. As the private space race heats up, it’s allowed the agency to turn its attention to new frontiers, but it also presents its own set of challenges.

Alyssa Julie reports.
